Pterry’s True Science: New dinosaur found in South Africa

Posted in Pterry's True Science, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on November 11, 2009 by Mr. Welton

Pterry found a new dinosaur species in South Africa, cool =)!!!…………

for more info concerning the text above read below:

Dinosaur

Hello Webosaurs crew! Pterry here and I’m back yet again with another news story for Pterry’s True Science. When we think of dinosaurs we always think of the past and things that happened long ago. However, a beautiful thing about the field of paleontology is that we are learning new things all the time. Recently, a group of paleontologists in South Africa have found a new species of dinosaur no one has ever seen before.

Aardonyx celestae was a 23 ft (7 m) long plant eater that scientists believe is a missing link in the evolution of small dinosaurs to the mammoth creatures we think of. Aardonyx celestae was likely an early sauropod who could walk on its back two legs but also drop down on all fours. As these kind of dinosaurs eventually ended up on all fours like the sauropods we know of today, the finding of this dino is extremely important to understanding their evolution.

We’re lucky to have found this dinosaur since the paleontologists were almost ready to give up digging in the area they found it!

Hope you all have enjoyed my True Science fact for today. Back to the lab for me but enjoy your time on the island.

Daily Dino Fact: Sir Richard Owen – Dinosaur hunter

Posted in Daily Dino Facts, Post By Rexxy with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 10, 2009 by Mr. Welton

In today’s Daily Dino Fact ”cos” asks “Which person first ever discovered dinosaurs?” and Rex answers the question =), I was fascinated myself.

for more info concerning the text above read below:

Sir Richard Owen

Q: Which person first ever discovered dinosaurs? Cos

A: Well Cos, dinosaur fossils have been found by humans for a very long time. It is believed that many ancient Chinese myths about dragons were founded on the fossil remains of dinosaurs. However, it wasn’t until the 1600’s that a dinosaur bone was scientifically described. Even then, humans still didn’t know quite what it was.

Robert Plot, an English museum curator, found a bone in 1676 that he believed to be the thigh bone of an ancient giant human being. Based on drawings we have of his find, most assume it was part of a Megalosaurus bone.

In 1822, Mary Ann Mantell from England found a set of giant fossilized dinosaur teeth that she thought belonged to an ancient iguana.

Finally, in 1841, Sir Richard Owen hypothesized that these collection of bones weren’t from any kind of animal that we were ever aware of before. He decided that these group of animals should be called “Dinosauria” which we all know means “terrible lizard.” He was the first person to actually coin the term “Dinosaur” and has become famous for this.

Thank you so much for the question, Cos.
